Empathy? You got it?

evans2c

Let’s define Empathy……. It is the cornerstone for human connection! It is the ability to share feelings, understand someone’s feelings, show compassion and even going deeper to try too understand and experience all of this from the other persons perspective.

Empathy consists of three key components:

1. Cognitive Empathy: Understanding another person’s perspective, thoughts, and feelings.

2. Emotional Empathy: Sharing and experiencing the emotions of another person.

3. Compassionate Empathy: Taking action to help others based on understanding and sharing their emotions.

One might argue that you need all three to truly be an empathetic person. Others might argue that you can have one type of empathy and not the others. For this post I am going to take the thought that you must have ALL THREE to truly be an empathetic person! Otherwise you are falling short. Soooooo, how do you become this person? Well, let’s start with “Active Listening.

*Active Listening: Pay close attention to what others are saying without judgement. Practice reflective listening by paraphrasing what they’ve said to show understanding. You definite don’t interrupt people and you don’t “one up” the other person with YOUR story. You CAN always ask follow up questions.

*In order for that to happen you must be open minded. This approach is accepting that others may have different perspectives and experiences than your own and taking the approach that that is OK! People can be different from you, have different ideas and/or experiences and you embrace that. That doesn’t mean you agree with it, it means you try to understand and accept it.

*When you do disagree or don’t understand or know about what is being shared, you take time to read, google or investigate to learn more. Empathetic people like to expand their knowledge base, learn about others and other cultures, languages and etc…

*That leads us to giving back by volunteering or serving others. It just means that you get involved in community service or volunteer work to interact with people facing different challenges and circumstances. It doesn’t mean that you “get into everyone else’s business”.

*BUT while you are giving back you must also take care and be kind to yourself. Cultivating empathy for others starts with being kind and taking care of yourself. Practice self-care and self-compassion to build a strong foundation for empathy towards others is critical. No martyr syndrome here.

*Lastly and so very important is the ability to challenge stereotypes. Recognize and challenge stereotypes and biases that may hinder your ability to empathize with others. Cultivate empathy by seeking to understand individuals as unique and complex beings. It’s like believing all overweight people are lazy which just isn’t the case. We must over come these archaic stereotypes and biases. We must evolve.

*Empathy is a skill that can be developed and strengthened with practice. By actively listening, practicing perspective-taking, and engaging in meaningful dialogue, we can cultivate empathy and foster deeper connections with others. In a world that often feels divided, empathy serves as a powerful tool for promoting understanding, compassion, and unity. Is there an area you fall short? No worries, you can start NOW!
